Why Is 12 Rabi ul Awal 2026 Showing as Both 25 and 26 August?

Why 12 Rabi ul Awal 2026 falls on 25 or 26 August
The Gregorian date depends on whether 1 Rabi ul Awwal begins on 14 or 15 August 2026.

The difference is straightforward.

If:

1 Rabi ul Awal = 14 August 2026

then:

12 Rabi ul Awal = 25 August 2026

But if:

1 Rabi ul Awal = 15 August 2026

then:

12 Rabi ul Awal = 26 August 2026

Islamic months are lunar and can begin differently between communities because Muslims may follow local crescent sightings, accepted sightings from another region or established calculation-based calendars. This is why a one-day difference does not necessarily mean that one website has simply counted incorrectly.

When Does 12 Rabi ul Awal 2026 Begin?

An Islamic date begins at sunset rather than at 12:00 midnight.

Therefore, where 12 Rabi ul Awal is Wednesday, 26 August, the Islamic day begins from Maghrib on Tuesday, 25 August and continues until sunset on Wednesday.

Where the 12th is observed on Tuesday, 25 August, it begins after sunset on Monday, 24 August. BQA’s existing Rabi ul Awwal guide also explains this sunset-to-sunset distinction.

What Is 12 Rabi ul Awal?

Rabi ul Awwal—or Rabi al-Awwal—is the third month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. The twelfth day of this month is widely associated by Sunni Muslim communities with the birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and is commonly referred to as Mawlid al-Nabi, Eid Milad un Nabi or Eid-e-Milad.

Rabi al-Awwal is especially meaningful because it encourages Muslims to study the Seerah, character, teachings and example of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Allah describes the Prophet ﷺ in the Quran as a mercy for the worlds:

“We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ only as a mercy for the whole world.” — Quran 21:107

The lasting importance of Rabi ul Awwal should therefore extend beyond remembering a historical date. It is an opportunity to learn how the Prophet ﷺ worshipped Allah, treated his family, taught his companions, cared for the vulnerable and demonstrated mercy in everyday life.

Was Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Definitely Born on 12 Rabi ul Awal?

12 Rabi ul Awal is the date traditionally associated by many Sunni Muslims and scholars with the birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, although historical opinions regarding the exact date differ.

The Importance of Loving and Learning About Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should lead Muslims toward learning and following his guidance.

Rabi ul Awwal provides families with a natural opportunity to introduce children to the Prophet’s Seerah: his honesty, mercy, patience, courage, worship, treatment of neighbours, concern for the poor and devotion to Allah.

The Quran also explicitly instructs believers to send blessings and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ in Surah Al-Ahzab 33:56.

This command is not restricted to Rabi ul Awwal; Muslims can send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ throughout the year.

Meaningful Ways to Spend Rabi ul Awal

Muslim communities differ in how they mark Rabi ul Awwal, so a particular cultural practice should not be presented as compulsory for every Muslim.

Families can use the occasion constructively by studying the Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, reading and reflecting on the Quran, teaching children about prophetic character, sending salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, making sincere dua, helping people in need and strengthening good habits that continue beyond a single day.
