The Ultimate Guide to the 4 Quls in Quran: Protection, Blessings, and Meanings

Beautiful high-resolution image of the 4 Quls in Quran with Arabic text and English translation for spiritual protection.

Introduction

In my years of teaching at Bushra Quran Academy, I have encountered countless students—from young children to busy professionals—who feel a deep sense of spiritual unrest. You might feel it too: a lingering anxiety, the weight of “negative energy,” or a feeling that you are spiritually “unprotected” in an increasingly chaotic world. The agitation is real. We live in an era where mental health struggles and spiritual disconnect are at an all-time high. Many of us know that we should recite the Quran for protection, but we often don’t know what specifically to recite or why these verses hold such immense power.

The solution lies in four short, yet incredibly potent chapters known as the 4 Quls in Quran. These Surahs—Al-Kafirun, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas—serve as a spiritual armor, a declaration of faith, and a direct line to Divine protection. In this definitive guide, I will take you through the depths of these Surahs, their historical context, and how you can integrate them into your daily life for maximum impact.

What are the 4 Quls in Quran?

The term “4 Quls” refers to four specific Surahs in the final Juzu (Juz Amma) of the Quran that all begin with the Arabic word “Qul” (قُلْ), which translates to “Say.” When Allah commands “Say,” He is giving a direct instruction to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and, by extension, to every believer. These are not just words of prayer; they are declarations of identity and shields against harm.

Why Are the 4 Quls Important?

The Four Quls in Islam summarize essential Islamic beliefs. They focus on Tawheed, protection from evil, and clear separation between belief and disbelief.

Importance of the 4 Quls In Quran:

  • Strengthen belief in Allah
  • Protect from visible and hidden harm
  • Encourage reliance on Allah
  • Improve daily remembrance
  • Build a strong Islamic foundation

Regular recitation brings peace and confidence to the heart.

The 4 Quls Name,s

  1. Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) – Chapter 109

  2. Surah Al-Ikhlas (The Sincerity) – Chapter 112

  3. Surah Al-Falaq (The Daybreak) – Chapter 113

  4. Surah An-Nas (Mankind) – Chapter 114

In South Asian cultures, these are often referred to as the 4 Qul Shareef or Char Qul. Regardless of the name, their importance in Islamic theology is paramount.

1. Surah Al-Kafirun: The Shield of Faith

As a practitioner, I often tell my students that Surah Al-Kafirun is the ultimate boundary-setter. It was revealed in Makkah at a time when the leaders of the Quraysh tried to negotiate a “compromise” with the Prophet (PBUH): they would worship Allah for a year if he worshipped their idols for a year.

Transliteration

 “Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem
Qul ya ayyuhal-Kafiroun
La ‘a-budu ma ta’-bu-doun
Wa la antum ‘abidouna ma ‘a-bud
Wa la ana ‘abidum-ma ‘abadttum
Wa la antum ‘abiduna ma ‘a-bud
Lakum deenukum wa li-ya deen”

Translation

Say : O Al-Kafiroun ( disbelievers in Allah , in His Oneness , in His Angels , in His Books , in His Messengers , in the Day of Resurrection , and in Al-Qadar , etc )! I worship not that which you worship, Nor will you worship that which I worship. And I shall not worship that which you are worshipping. Nor will you worship that which I worship. To you be your religion, and to me my religion (Islamic Monotheism).

Why This Surah Matters

This Surah isn’t about intolerance; it’s about the purity of belief. It teaches us that there is no “middle ground” in the core of our faith.

Nuance

In 2026, where pluralism often blurs the lines of religious identity, Al-Kafirun provides a clear framework for respectful coexistence without compromising our own Tawhid (monotheism).

The Benefit

Reciting this Surah before bed is a “disavowal of Shirk” (associating partners with Allah).

2. Surah Al-Ikhlas: The Essence of the Quran

If you are looking for the “heart” of Islamic theology, you will find it in Surah Al-Ikhlas. Despite being only four verses long, the Prophet (PBUH) famously stated that it is equivalent to one-third of the Quran (Sahih Bukhari).

Transliteration

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem

Qul Huwa-llahu ‘Ahad

Allahus-Samad

Lam Yalid Wa Lam Yulad

Walam Yakul-La-Hu-Kufuwan ‘Ahad “

Translation

Say : He is Allah,(the) One, Allahus-Samad ( The Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks ). He begots not , nor was He begotten; And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.

The Theology of Tawhid

I have spent years studying the linguistic miracles of this Surah. The word As-Samad (The Eternal, Besought by all) is a term used nowhere else in the Quran in this context. It describes God as being perfect, needing nothing, while everything else needs Him.

3. Surah Al-Falaq: Protection from External Harm

Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas are together known as the Mu’awwidhatayn (The Two Surahs of Refuge).

Al-Falaq focuses on seeking refuge from external evils:

  • The mischief of created things.

  • The darkness of the night.

  • The “blowers on knots” (sorcery/magic).

  • The envier when he envies (The Evil Eye).

Transliteration

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem

Qul ‘A’udhu Bi-Rabbil-Falaq

Min Sharri Ma Khalaq

Wa Min Sharri Ghasiqin ‘Idha Waqab

Wa Min Sharri-Naffathati Fil-‘Uqadi

Wa Min Sharri Hasidin ‘Idha Hasad

Translation

Say : I seek refuge with ( Allah ) the Lord of the daybreak, From the evil of what He has created; And from the evil of the darkening ( night ) as it comes with its darkness; ( or the moon as it sets or goes away ). And from the evil of the witchcrafts when they blow in the knots, And from the evil of the envier when he envies.

Real-World Insight: The "Ayn" (Evil Eye)

In my experience at Bushra Quran Academy, many people come to us asking about protection from Ayn. It is a documented reality in Islamic tradition (Sahih Muslim 2188). Surah Al-Falaq is your primary defense. It acknowledges that while evil exists in the world, the refuge of Allah is greater.

4. Surah An-Nas: The Shield Against Internal Whispers

While Al-Falaq protects us from what is outside, Surah An-Nas protects us from what is inside. It targets the Waswasa—the whispers of Shaytan that manifest as doubt, anxiety, and negative self-talk.

Transliteration

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem

Qul ‘A’udhu Bi-Rabbin-Nas

Malikin-Nas

Ilahin-Nas

Min-Sharril-Waswasil-Khan-Nas

Al-Ladhi Yuwas-wisu Fee Sudurin-Nas

Mina Al-Jinnati Wan-Nas

Translation

Say : I seek refuge with (Allah ) the lord of mankind, The king of mankind, The Ilah ( God ) of mankind, From the evil of the whisperer ( devi l who whispers evil in the hearts of men) , who withdraws ( from his whispering in one’s heart after one remembers Allah ), Who whispers in the breasts of mankind , Of jinns and men.”

Why We Need It in 2026

In an age of digital noise and constant comparison, “internal whispers” are at an all-time high. Surah An-Nas reminds us that Allah is the:

  1. Rabb (Lord)

  2. Malik (King)

  3. Ilah (God) …of mankind.

By reciting this, you are effectively telling your anxieties that they have no power over you because you are under the protection of the King of Kings.

The "Why" Behind the Power: Asbab al-Nuzul

To truly understand the 4 quls in quran, we must look at why the last two were revealed. Authentic narrations (recorded by Imam Al-Bayhaqi and others) suggest that a spell was once cast upon the Prophet (PBUH) by a man named Labid bin al-A’sam. The Prophet (PBUH) fell ill and felt confused until Angel Jibril (AS) revealed the Mu’awwidhatayn. As he recited each verse, the knots of the magic were untied.

This is a crucial lesson:

If the Prophet (PBUH) used these Surahs for protection and healing, how much more do we need them in our flawed daily lives?

Key Benefits Table

SurahPrimary BenefitBest Time to Recite
Al-KafirunFreedom from Shirk (Polytheism)Before sleeping
Al-IkhlasReward of 1/3 of the QuranThroughout the day
Al-FalaqProtection from Magic & Evil EyeMorning & Evening
